iPad: Hit by glitches?

Modest queues for the iPad

Modest queues for the iPad

It's the same with every piece of new technology released, but Apple's long-awaited iPad has been hit by reports that many new customers cannot connect to Wi-Fi networks with it.

While other problems with the device such as unstable apps and lack of GPS have filled many a iPad reviews, the device's inability to connect to Wi-Fi network has frustrated many new customers.

While the device has been an undeniable hit with Apple selling more than 300,000 iPads on its launch day in the US on Saturday, many have criticised the device for being 'too locked down' or too based around 'consuming information rather than creating it'.

However while the new device is meant to come with wi-fi but not (annoyingly) 3G connectivity, many are finding it hard to connect. On the Apple forums, users such as aa514 from Los Angeles wrote, "All my devices, two laptops and iPhone have a strong signal, but my iPad does not connect to the Internet at home at all and has a weak connection at work."

TechCrunch have even reported 'scores of complaints' with editor Michael Arrington reporting difficulties with his device.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Arrington said "My understanding of Wi-Fi issues on devices, particularly cramped devices like the MacBook Air and iPad, is that it's usually a hardware/design issue and something that can't be fixed via a software patch."

Strong debut

While the iPad saw strong sales, crowds and units shifted were nowhere near as large as for the iPhone's debut in 2007 (which sold more that 525,000 units in its first weekend). However, some decent reviews and endorsements from the likes of Stephen Fry and TechBlog might see the iPad find an audience.

Whether the audience is big to warrant a device that is seen as the missing link between the smartphone and the laptop is another thing though...
